A full driving day. Good for transfer days, less so for sightseeing along the way.

There's no legal daily limit for private drivers in the U.S. Commercial truckers work under FMCSA hours-of-service rules, which cap driving at 11 hours within a 14-hour window. That's a professional maximum, not a comfortable holiday pace. Road-safety groups such as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration warn that drowsy driving is dangerous. Common advice is a break at least every two hours, and switching drivers where you can.

Driving time FAQ

How far can you drive in a day?

On interstates at about 60–65 mph average, 8 hours at the wheel covers roughly 500 miles, and with stops that’s a 10-hour day. For an enjoyable road trip, most people aim for 250–350 miles, or 4–6 hours of driving.

How many hours is 500 miles?

At a 62 mph moving average, 500 miles is about 8 hours of wheel time, and around 9.5 hours with breaks, fuel and a meal.

How often should I take a break when driving?

A common recommendation from road-safety organisations is a 15-minute break at least every two hours or 100 miles, and stopping sooner if you feel drowsy.

Why is my real drive longer than the map said?

Map estimates count moving time only. Fuel stops, meals, restroom breaks, traffic, road work and sightseeing all add to it, often 20–30% on a long day.
